KhaRå Martin, a young filmmaker and actor embarks on a quest to rediscover significant Black social movements in Canada. Black Community Mixtapes breathes new life into the personal archives gathered by individual Canadians and shines a light on life-changing moments that ignited Canadian Black History.
Plenty of Black Canadian history lives in crates, file folders and photo albums, stowed in the basements of Black retirees, and are often unseen, undocumented and unrecognized by national institutions. If Black Canadian history isn’t available online or in a museum, will Canadians ever know that it exists?
Black Community Mixtapes (BCMT) is a five part docu-series that follows a young filmmaker on her quest to rediscover Canadian Black History and breathe new life into the archives. Host of the show, KhaRå Martin, embarks on a journey interviewing Black Canadian archivists, musicians, artists and culture makers as they walk us through the rich world of Black Canadian culture.
Each 30 minute episode of BCMT focuses on different aspects of Black Canadian culture and history, from photography to hip hop, we follow Khara as she uncovers Canada’s never seldom seen footage and materials. We will then dive into the content itself and discover why these items are essential to Black Canadian History and Canadian history as a whole. By looking through the eyes of the people who were passionate enough to collect and store these materials, KhaRå follows these culture makers, diving deeper into what makes Canadian history and, in turn, learning more about the rich heritage here in Toronto and herself.
